Its not the cloth that oppresses women, it's the illiterate mind

Mikä alistaa naista? Alistaako yksi pieni vaatekappale naisen? vai jokin muu?

Jätetään hetkeksi huivi sivuun ja ajatellaan naista, jolla on vahva persoona, oma tahto, hän on kouluttautunut, elää unelma-ammatissa ja kykenee vaikuttamaan omalla positiivisella asenteella ulospäin, niin miten jokin pieni vaatekappale voi yhtäkkiä muuttaa tämän kaiken? Jos ajattelemme Rouva Presidenttiä (Suomen entistä presidenttiä), tunnemme hänet älykkäänä ja vahvana naisena, joka toimii aktiivisena kansalaisena. Jos yhtäkkiä Rouva Presidentti päättää laittaa huivin päähänsä, niin pyyhkiikö huivi sen kaiken, mitä Rouva Presidentti on ja mitä hyvää hän on tehnyt? Ei! Sillä hän on edelleen sama fiksu ja älykäs nainen, joka edelleen ajattelee kansalaisten hyvinvoinnin parasta.

What oppresses women? Does the piece of cloth oppress women? or is there something else that oppresses woman?

Let’s leave the scarf aside for a while and let’s think of a woman who has a strong person, mind of their own, who is educated and who lives in her dream job, a person who can affect by their positive mind on others, now how can piece of cloth change all that? all the person? Lets think of Mrs. President ( former President of Finland), whom we know as a smart and strong woman, who is very active citizen and all of the sudden she starts to wear scarf. Will the scarf change Mrs. President’s person and the good thing that she have done? No! She will still stay smart and she will still think the best for the citizens. 

Huivi vaatekappaleena ei alista naista, vaan se on oppimaton järki, joka saa naisen alistumaan. Sellainen henkilö, joka ei tiedä huivin todellista merkitystä, vaan hänet on vain aivopesty käyttämään ja uskoteltu väärään tietoon, hän on silloin alistettu tiedon puutteen vuoksi. Tietämätön ja oppimaton nainen helposti ymmärtää huivin väärin ja uskottelee itselleen, että huivi symboloi vaitioloa ja alistumista miehen tai yhteiskunnan tahdolle. Tietämätön ja oppimaton nainen ei tiedä huivin todellista merkitystä. Huivi ei kiellä naista käyttämästä äänioikeuttaan, eikä se myöskään kiellä naista kouluttautumasta tai tekemästä työtä. Se ei ole huivi, joka saa naisen alistumaan, vaan tietämättömyys. Tietämätön ihminen ei tiedä, että islamissa kaikkia, niin naisia kuin miehiä kehotetaan, kannustetaan opiskelemaan ja hakemaan tietoa. Naisen on oltava tietoinen islamin asettamista oikeuksista. Islamissa ketään ei saa alistaa tai sortaa.

Scarf as a piece of cloth is not oppressing the woman, what oppress woman is illiterate mind. Person who doesn't know the real meaning of the scarf, who is only brainwashed to wear it and who is told to believe in wrong information, then we can say that the woman is oppressed because of the lack of knowledge. Person who is unaware and has lack of knowledge usually believes that the scarf symbolizes silence and quietness and to submit to the man or to the society. The person who has no knowledge doesn't really know the meaning of the scarf. The scarf doesn't stop woman’s voice to be heard and its doesn't stop woman to be educated and it doesn't also stop woman from the work. It’s not the scarf which oppresses woman it’s the lack of knowledge. The person who is unaware doesn't know that Islam encourages woman and man to educate themselves and to search for the knowledge. Women should be aware of her rights in Islam. In Islam no one has right to oppress anyone.

Kouluta nainen, niin tulet kouluttamaan koko kansan. Educate a woman and you will educate a nation

Hala's Day

Mmm! Viime perjantai oli erikoinen päivä, koska koulussa oli ysigaala. Heräsin viideltä, jotta ehtisin pukea rauhallisesti. Tulin kuitenkin 30 minuuttia myöhässä kouluun... Kolme ensimmäistä tuntia olivat normaaleja ja sitten ysigaala alkoi klo 12.15. Alussa reksi piti pienen puheen (reksin puheet ovat aina tylsiä :b). Sitten tukioppilaat pitivät näytelmän opettajista. Viimeisenä oli palkintojen jako. Ysigaala on erikoinen koulujuhla.

Mmm! Last Friday was a special day, because we had a gala for 9th graders (kind of a graduation ceremony for the ones graduating from high school). I woke up at 5 a.m. to have time to choose my dress. Anyway I arrived at school 30 minutes late... The first three hours were normal and then the party began at 12.15 p.m. First our headmaster gave a speech (they are always boring :b). Then there was prefects' play about the teachers of our school. In the end we had a prize-giving. The party was very special. 

Koska ysiluokka on loppumaisillaan, päätimme mennä yhdessä kavereiden kanssa kahville. Kahvilassa muistelimme hauskoja asioita, joita oli tapahtunut yläasteen aikana. Koska puhumme liikaa, meille ei riitä ikinä edes 5h istuskelu kahvilassa. Kahvilassa otin wienerleivoksen ja mangojuoman.

Since the last year of high school is almost over we decided to go for a coffee with my friends. In the cafe we looked back to things that happened to us during the high school years. Because we always talk too much even 5 hours sitting in the cafe isn't enough for us. In the cafe I chose a wiener and a mango juice.

Minä olen... Skye Mariam, islamin löytänyt musliminainen, liettualainen, vaimo, sisko, tytär, ystävä, psykologian opiskelija, youtuubbaaja ja bloggaaja.... Meillä on monia rooleja elämässä muodostamassa identiteettiämme. 

Lempiruokani... huolimatta siitä suunnattomasta syyllisyyden tunteesta, joka tulee syödessäni lihaa ja loputtomista yrityksistäni ryhtyä kasvissyöjäksi, täytyy myöntää, että rakastan kanaa. Joka tavalla kokattuna.

Lempikirjani... minun täytyy kyllä sanoa, että Koraani on kirjojen kirja. Koraanin lisäksi tykkään lukea Paulo Coelhon kirjoja sekä muiden uskontojen pyhiä kirjoja, kuten raamattua, Tooraa, Sikhien pyhiä tekstejä jne.

Lempiurheilulajini... en tykkää niin paljon urheilusta, paitsi uiminen on lähellä sydäntäni.

Lempiaineeni... on historia ja uskonto.

Lempipaikkani... on koti, missä ikinä se onkin.

I am... Skye Mariam, I am a revert Muslimah, Lithuanian, I am a wife, I am a sister, daughter, friend, psychology student, youtuber, blogger… We play many roles in life that shape our identity.

My favourite food...  Despite my overwhelming guilt for eating meat and endless attempts to become a vegetarian I have to admit that I love chicken. Cooked in any way…

My favourite animal... Unlike many Muslims I actually prefer dogs over cats. Dog is my most beloved animal to keep as pet. There are many animals in the wild that I like, such as monkeys, elephants, horses and dolphins.

My favourite book... I must say that Quran is The Book of books. Apart from The Holy Quran I enjoy reading books by Paulo Coelho. I also enjoy reading books that are Holy in other religions: The Bible, Torah, texts of Sikhism and more.

My favourite sport... I am not that much into sports, though swimming is closest to my heart.

My favourite subject... History and Religion.

My favourite place... Home. Wherever it might be. 


Huivikysymykset: 

Huivin laittamisessa... ei kestä kauan arkena. Kuitenkin yritän saada sen laitettua hienommin erityisiin tapahtumiin. Arkena kestää noin 5-10 minuuttia ja muuten korkeintaan 20 minuuttia tapahtumasta riippuen.

Ensimmäinen huivini... oli tosi paksu pashminahuivi, joka oli alun perin tarkoitettu talvella käytettäväksi kaulahuiviksi! Vähämpä tiesin niihin aikoihin huivin käytöstä. Minun piti oppia kaikki kantapään kautta.

Huivineuloja... ei vaadita arkiseen huivityyliini yhtäkään, koska kaikki riippuu siitä, miten huivin asettelee. Monimutkaisempiin huivityyleihin saatan käyttää kolmekin huivineulaa.

Hauskin huivitarinani... ei oikeastaan tule mieleen yhtään. Ehkäpä se oli hassua, kuinka naispuoliset ei-muslimi-työkaverini halusivat nähdä hiukseni ja yrittivät jatkuvasti kurkkia huivini alle jopa niin, että joka kerta kun kurottauduin alaspäin joku tuli ja nosti huiviani vähän ylös takaa päin. 

Hijab Questions:

Putting the scarf on...doesn’t take long daily, however I do try to perfect it for special events. It maybe takes 5-10 minutes every day and up to 20 in case of the event.

My first scarf... was very thick pashmina that was originally meant to be a winter neck scarf! Little did I know back in the day and had to learn everything the hard way

The amount of hijab pins I need... My daily hijab scarf nowadays does not require any pins at all, as it is all about the way I fold it. When it comes to some more difficult styles I might use up to 3 pins.

My funniest hijab story... I cannot think of any actually… I guess it was funny when non-muslim female co-workers wanted to see my hair and kept on trying to peek under my scarf every time I would bend to the point where one actually just came and picked my scarf up a bit from the back 


Tykkään... kun ihmiset ovat kivoja; äitini käsistä; cappucinosta, mieheni hymystä kun pääsen töistä; joogasta aamuisin ja meditoinnista iltaisin; siitä tunteesta ja tuoksusta kun talo on puhdas; ajatuksesta miltä lapseni näyttäisivät; tarkistuslistojen kirjoittamisesta; youtube-videoiden tekemisestä jne...

En tykkää... yrittää keskustella ahdasmielisten ihmisten kanssa

Vapaa-ajallani minä... yritän päivittäin viettää vähän omaa aikaa, esim. joogaamalla aamuisin, kuvaamalla ja editoimalla videoita, olemalla yhteyksissä perheeseeni ja kirjoittamalla blogia.

Ottaisin mukaan autiolle saarelle... Koraanin, kameran ja perheeni.

I like... when people are nice; the hands of my mother; cappuccino coffee; the smile of my husband when I get from work; yoga in the morning and meditation at night; smell and feel of clean house; the thought of how my children might look like; writing checklists; making youtube videos etc…

I don’t like... trying to have conversations with closed-minded people.

In the free time... I enjoy having at least a little bit of “me” time every day. It might be yoga in the morning, filming and editing videos, keeping in touch with family, writing my blog.

I would take with me to a desert island... the Quran, camera and my family

Tulevaisuudessa minä... haluaisin valmistua psykologiksi ja saada perheenlisäystä inshaAllah.

Jos voisin muuttaa yhden asian maailmassa... tekisin jokaiselle mahdolliseksi elää sovussa. Ei sotia. Ei vihaa. Ei vääränlaista kommunikaatiota. Vain yksi ihmiskunta/inhimillisyys.

Paras saamani neuvo on... antaa olla sen, jota ei voi kontrolloida, tehdä parhaani ja jättää loppu Kaikkivaltiaalle!

Viesti, jonka haluan välittää maailmalle on...  että Jumala On Todellinen.


In the future... I would like to graduate from Psychology and expand our family inshallah.

If I could change one thing in the world, I would... make everyone be able to peacefully co-exist. No war. No hatred. No miss-communication. Just One humanity.

The best advice I’ve got is... to let go of what I have no power to control, do my best and leave the rest to the Almighty!

The message I would like to tell to the world is... That God Is Real.

Moving Day

Olen vähentänyt kahvin juontia puolikkaaseen kuppiin päivässä

Kypärä päässä huivini ei näy ja ihmisten reaktio on huvittava kun he näkevät minun ottavan kypärän pois ja sieltä paljastuu huivipäinen :)



When I wear the helmet, my scarf doesn't show and it's so funny to see people's reaction when they see me taking the helmet off :)

Tuntuu niin turhalta kun ei voi tankata kerralla enempää, mutta toi kyllä kestää melkein viikon.
It's frustrate that I cannot refuel more than that but it last for almost a week.

Noin puolivuotta sitten kuulin, että meidän melko uusi rakennus (2006) oli hätiköiden rakennettu. Rakennusmiehet eivät odottaneet tarpeeksi pitkään, että betoni kuivuisi kun he asentelivat muovimaton. Näiden vuosien aikana liima on yhteisvaikutuksessa kosteuden kanssa muodostuttanut kaasua. Monet työkaveri ovat oireilleet, mutta Alhamdulillah en ole huomannut mitään muutoksia terveydessäni, paitsi päänsärkyä. Tutkimuksia tehtiin paljon ja loppujen lopuksi päätettiin, että melkein koko rakennus, mikä on iso, pitää tyhjentää.

Jokapäivä kuulen uuden kertomuksen. Yhtenä päivänä sanotaan, että olemme väistötiloissa vain kesän ajan ja muutamme takaisin alkusyksystä. Nyt kuulin, että se kestää vähintään 6 kuukautta. Me kaikki tiedetään, että se venyy vielä siitäkin...

About an half year ago I heard at work that our quite new building (2006) was precipitately built. The construction workers didn't wait enough time for the concrete to dry when installing plastic carpet. During these years the glue has interacted with the moisture resulting gas. Many of my coworkers had some symptoms because of the formed gas. Alhamdulillah I haven't noticed any difference in my health, except headache. There were many examinations and in the end it was decided that almost the whole building, which is huge, need to be emptied.

Everyday I hear a new story. One day they say that we will be in dodge space only during the summer and we can move back in the beginning of Autumn. Now I heard that it will last at least 6 months. We all know that it will take much longer than that...

Saimme ottaa mukaamme vain yhden muuttolaatikon, mikä ei kylläkään riittänyt minulle :) Loput tavarat varastoidaan. Olen tyhjentänyt monta kansiota koska aikaisemmilla työntekijöillä oli tapana tulostaa kaikki ja mapittaa. Painoitan sanaa kaikki.

We could take only one moving box with us which is not enough for me :) Rest of them will be putting in a storage. I have cleaned so many folders because those workers before me had a habit to print everything. I mean everything.

Opiskelijoiden atk-luokka muutettiin 7 työtekijän työhuoneeksi muutamaksi kuukaudeksi. Kuvassa näkyy vain puolet tilasta.Sain onneksi ikkunapaikan :)

Tuntuu, että olen ihan uudessa työpaikassa. No, fyysisesti se on ainakin totta. Itse asiassa, tämä uusi työpisteeni vaikuttaa mukavalta. Saa nähdä kuinka homma lähtee käyntiin, kun puhelimet alkaa soida samaan aikaan :)

It feels like I'm in a new working place. Well, physically it's true. Actually, this new workplace seems like a nice place. Will see how this arragnment starts running when phones ring at the same time :)

The Restaurant Day

Oli pitkä ja lämmin päivä. Aamupäivällä lähdin projektimme kokoukseen. Sen jälkeen lähdin siskojen kanssa kaupungille shoppailemaan. Kiertelimme pitkään odottaen toisen ystävämme saapumista. Meidän piti ostaa lahja kaverillemme. Pitkän pohdiskelun jälkeen päätimme lahjan.

Today was a long and a warm day. In the morning I left to our project meeting. After that we went shopping with my sisters. We walked around a long time waiting another friend to arrive. We wanted to buy a gift for my mate. After searching for the present for a long time we made the decision. 

Siskoni kertoi nähneensä torilla yhden projektimme tytöistä myymässä leivonnaisia. Minä muistin, että tänään oli ravintolapäivä,  jolloin kuka tahansa voi perustaa ravintolan ja myydä tuotteitaan. Vanha koulukaverini mainitsi siitä eilen minulle ja kutsui maistelemaan. En ollut aiemmin kuullut ravintolapäivästä.

Päätimme mennä tervehtimään tyttöä ja samalla ostamaan leivonnaisia. Olimme kävelemässä telttaa kohti, kun huomasin vanhan koulukaverini, joka oli samassa teltassa myymässä leivonnaisia myös. Meitä oli iso porukka huivipäisiä seisomassa siinä teltan edessä. Kyselimme tytöiltä, mitä täytteitä leivonnaisissa on. Päätimme maistaa niitä ja ostimme samanlaiset leivokset ystävieni kanssa. Jäimme syömään siinä ja juttelimme niitä näitä.

Then my sister told me that she had seen one of the girls of our project group on the market selling pastries. I remembered that today was a restaurant day (it's a food carnival day when everyone can open a restaurant). My old schoolmate had told me about it yesterday and asked me to come and taste her food. I hadn't heard about the restaurant day before.

We then decided to go and say hello to the girl and buy some pastries. We were walking towards the tent when I saw my schoolmate who was selling her pastries in the same tent. There were a lot of hijabees standing there. We asked the girls about the ingredients of the pastries. We decided to taste them and bought the same kind of pastries with my friends. We ate them there and talked this and that.

Sitten lähdimme ystävieni kanssa bussilla veljeni perheen luo viettämään loppupäivää. Vietimme veljen perheen kanssa aikaa, söimme ja juttelimme. Lähdimme illalla takaisin kaupunkia kohti ja vihdoin pääsin kotiin rentoutumaan ja viettämään loppuillan mieheni kanssa.



Then we left to visit my brother's family with my friends. We had a nice time with them. We ate and talked a lot. In the evening we left back home. Finally I arrived home to relax a bit and to have a nice evening with my family.

Did they convert you?

Lupasin aiemmin päiväkirjassa kertoa työkavereistani, vai pitäiskö sanoa hulluista ja rohkeista työkavereistani sen kaiken perusteella, mitä ollaan koettu ja keksitty yhdessä. Yleensä kaikkein villeimmät ideat ovat tulleet perjantaipäivinä. Kerran saimme jopa idean piilottaa ötököitä toistemme vaatteisiin, kenkiin ja kaappeihin (täytyy nyt lisätä, että kyse ei ollut oikeista ötököistä, muuten joku olisi voinut saada sydänkohtauksen :D)

Tällä kertaa kuitenkin ideamme oli sellainen, että siitä kehtaa kertoa muillekin. :)
Pari viikkoa sitten perjantaina kaksi työkaveriani kehuivat, kuinka hienoja huiveja minulla on. Siinä sitten hetki juteltiin huiveista, kunnes toinen heistä sai hyvän idean. Idea oli sellainen, että he halusivat laittaa huivit päähän ja tulla takaisin huoneseen nähdääkseen miten lapset reagoivat siihen. (Olemme siis päiväkodissa töissä).

He laittoivat toisessa huoneessa kaulahuivinsa päihinsä. Kun he palasivat, lapset lopettivat yhtäkkiä leikkimisen ja jäivät katsomaan heitä. Yksi lapsista tuli halimaan työkaverini kanssa. Pian kaikki lapset kuitenkin palasivat leikkeihinsä, eivätkä kiinnittäneet enää sen kummemmin huomiota huiveihin.

I promised before in the diary that I would tell you something about my workmates or should I say call them crazy workmates after everything we have experienced together. Usually the wildest ideas comes up on Friday afternoon. Once we got an idea to hide bugs into each others clothes, shoes and closet ( I have to say now that they were not real bugs, if they were real someone would have got an heart attack :D) 

This time our idea wasn't nonsense and it is something that I could share with others also :)
Couple weeks ago on Friday my workmates were admiring my scarves. After that we started to talk about scarves, and right after that one of them got an good idea. The idea was to try on the scarves on their head and see how the kids would react. ( We are working in the kindergarten)

They put the scarves on their heads in another room and when they came back to the room where the children were the children stopped playing and started to stare at my workmates. One of the kids came and hugged my workmate and soon after that all the kids went back to play and didn't pay attention on them at all after that.

Työkaverini halusivat vielä katsoa, miten vanhemmat reagoisivat huivipäisiin hoitajiin.

Ensimmäinen äiti, joka tuli hakemaan lastaan ei sanonut mitään, mutta hän näytti siltä, kuin olisi ollut vähän ihmeissään. Hän lähti melko vähäsanaisena pois. Seuraava äiti tuli ja minut eteisessä minut nähdessään tervehti iloisesti. Hän sanoi pojalleen, että mennään hakemaan vaatteet lokerostasi, koska tulee viikonloppu. Tultuaan peremmälle hän näki työkaverini huivi päässä. Siinä vaiheessa tämä äiti meni lukkoon eikä enää muistanut, mitä oli ollut hakemassa, eikä ottanutkaan vaatteita mukaan. Hän vaan toivotteli nopeasti hyvät viikonloput.

Puetut lapset odottivat kärsimättöminä eteisessä. Puimme nopeasti ja otimme lapset mukaan. Pihalla ensin kukaan ei kiinnittänyt työkaverieni huiveihin mitään huomiota. Hetken päästä muut työntekijät huomasivat huivit ja osoittivat heitä kaukaa uteliain silmin. Kukaan ei uskaltanut tulla sanomaan mitään, vaikka he olivat aikaisemmin paljon puhuneet kanssani huivista.

Sitten isommat lapset huomasivat huivin ja tulivat ihmettelemään sitä. 

Yksi heistä huusi kovaan ääneen:  MIKSI SINULLAKIN ON HUIVI PÄÄSSÄ? 

Työkaverini kysyi lapsilta, että sopiiko se minulle, johon tämä vastasi, että kyllä sopii hyvin ja sinulla on kaunis huivi. Toinen heistä sanoi hänen olevan nyt samanlainen kuin Hero (minä), mutta vähän isompi. :)

Sitten työkaverini piti mennä seuraavaa äitiä vastaan kertomaan miten hänen lapsensa päivä oli mennyt. Tämä kyseinen äiti yleensä kyselee hyvin tarkasti päivän kuulumiset. Tällä kertaa hän kuitenkin seisoi hiljaa katsellen ja tyytyi lyhyempään raporttiin. Vaikka minulla on huivi, minun kanssani hän aina juttelee paljon ja ystävällisesti. Nytkin äiti kuitenkin hymyili ystävällisesti ja vilkutti vielä lopuksi. 

Then my workmates wanted to see how the kids' parents would react when they see them wearing the scarf.

First mother, who came to pick up one of the kid didn't say anything, but she looked like she was wondering a bit. She didn't speak much before she left. Next mother came and saw me and said hello merrily. She said to her son lets go and get our stuff from the locker, because the weekend is coming. After she came close to the room she saw my workmate wearing the scarf after she saw  her, she didnt even remember what she was supposed to take and she didnt even take her son's clothes from the locker. She just said have a good weekend very quickly and left.

The kids were waiting on the vestibule eagerly when we would go out. We put clothes on and took the kids outside to play. First no one payed attention on the scarves. In a while other workers saw them and they pointed on my workmates from far away. No one didn't dare to come and say anything even though we have been talking with the a lot before.

After that the others kids on the playground saw my workmate with the scarf and they came to wonder her. One of them yelled out loud : WHY ARE YOU ALSO WEARING THE SCARF?

My workmate asked : does the scarf look nice on me? The kid replayed : yes it suits you very well and you have a beautiful scarf. Another kid said that she would look just like Hero ( and that's is me), but you are a bit bigger than her :)

Then my workmate went to receive another mother to tell her how did her kid had done today. Usually this mother would ask everything about the day but this time she just stood very quiet and kept looking at her and she was satisfied with the little information that she got to know about her son's day.  

Myöhemmin työkaverini kertoi minulle, että kaikki muutkin vanhemmat reagoivat huiviin hyvin samalla tavoin kuin aiemmin lapsia hakemaan tulleet. Kukaan ei ollut uskaltanut sanoa tai kommentoida mitään. Muut työntekijät taas olivat alkaneet kyselemään heti, kun minä olin lähtenyt. He olivat ihmetelleet, että  olenko käännyttänyt heidät ja että mikä ihme tuo huivi on?

Työkaverini kommentit:  Vanhempien reaktiot olivat hämmentäviä. Jotenkin he kohtelivat ja suhtautuivat meihin eri tavalla. Osa henkilökunnasta naureskeli ja kysyi, että onko meidät käännytetty. Jotkut olivat hyvin hämmentyneitä meidän touhusta. Itselleni tuli outo olo siitä. Ihan kuin se jotenkin olisi ollut ei-sallittua tai väärin.

Jollain tapaa pystyn asettumaan niiden asemaan, jotka ovat syntyperäisiä suomalaisia ja ottaneet huivin käyttöön. Tosi oudosti ja vähäsanaisesti meihin suhtauduttiin.

Later my workmate told me that all the parents reacted the same. No one didn't dare to say or comment on anything. In the other hand the workers started to ask them questions after that I left home. They started to wonder if I converted them to Islam and started to ask what's all with that scarf.

Comments from my workmate : The parents were confused and some how they reacted and treated us differently. Some of the staff just kept laughing and asked us if we were converted. Some of the were just confused. I felt very weird, its like its not ok to do this or its something wrong. Somehow I can really understand  the aboriginal Finn who wears the scarf. People act and react weirdly.

Ai niin, minun piti kertoa sekin, että kun aloitin työt tässä nykyisessä työpaikassani minun työkaverinikin oli aluksi muiden mukana ihmetellyt, miten minun huivipäisen kanssa voi tehdä töitä, osaanko edes kieltä. Hän tuli aluksi varovasti juttelemaan minulle ja pikkuhiljaa alkoi kyselemään minulta huivistani. Nykyään hän ei kuulemma edes huomaa huiviani.

And I forgot to tell that when I started my job here my workmate was wondering with the others how they could work with me who is wearing the scarf and they were wondering if I can even speak Finnish. First she came very carefully to talk with me and then step by step started to ask me about my scarf. But nowadays she doesn't even notice that I'm wearing the scarf.

Lopuksi haluan vielä kiittää rakkaita työkavereitani. Heidän kanssaan minulla on ollut todella kivaa.

One Vote Counts

Törmäsin tässä muutama päivä sitten, nyt tänään järjestettävien europarlamenttivaalien alla, mielenkiintoiseen blogipostaukseen, jonka on kirjoittanut isobritannialainen muslimi, lakinainen ja järjestöaktiivi Intissar Kherigi. Hän on myös FEMYSOn, suurimman eurooppalaisen musliminuorten järjestön, ensimmäinen naispuolinen puheenjohtaja. FEMYSO on 90-luvulla Ruotsissa perustettu järjestö, johon  kuuluu nykyään jäseniä eri puolilta Eurooppaa. Siihen kuuluu useita erillisiä nuoriso- ja opiskelijayhdistyksiä, joiden välistä yhteistyötä järjestö pyrkii kehittämään. Se pyrkii toimimaan musliminuorten äänenä Euroopan eri instituutioissa tavoitteenaan  monimuotoinen mutta yhtenäinen, menestyvä Eurooppa.

A few days ago I saw an interesting blog post about the European parliament elections which is now 25^th May. The post was written by Intissar Kherigi who is a Muslim and a lawyer living in UK. She is also the first female president of FEMYSO which is the largest European Muslim youth organization. FEMYSO is grounded in Sweden in the 90s. Now it has members from several countries and youth and student organization. FEMYSO’s aim is to increase their cooperation, to be the representative voice of the Muslim youth within the European institutions and to develop a diverse, but cohesive and prosperous Europe.

Kyseisessä blogikirjoituksessa Kherigi puhuu äänestämisen tärkeydestä. Hän esittää kysymyksen, miksi pitäisi äänestää, jos poliitikot tuntuvat olevan etäällä tavallisista ihmisistä ja poliittiset puolueet taistelevat keskenään sen sijaan, että taistelisivat yhteiskunnan ongelmakohtia vastaan. Kherigi kuitenkin muistuttaa, että yhdelläkin äänellä on merkitystä. Hän pyytää miettimään, kuinka suuri merkitys sillä olisi, jos edes puolet meistä toimisi aktiivisesti poliittisessa puolueessa ja vaatisi puoluettaan puhumaan asioista, jotka huolestuttavat meitä. Kherigi pyrkii herättelemään nukkuvia äänestäjiä, koska enemmistön jääminen kotiin äänestyspäivänä antaa tilaisuuden muutoin pienille, tiettyjä asioita ajaville lobbausryhmille.

The blog post is about the importance of voting. Kherigi asks the question why one should vote if “the politicians seem to be disconnected from people and the politic parties fight each other instead of fighting the problems in our societies”. Kherigi reminds us that one vote counts anyway. She asks us to think about how much difference it would make if just half of us were active in a political party and required their party to talk about the issues that concern us. Kherigi tries to encourage us to vote because if the majority stays at home on the Election Day it gives the opportunity to small special interest lobbies.

Kherigi muistuttaa, että poliitikot ovat tavallisten kansalaisten työntekijöitä, joiden valintaperusteet työhönottoon kuuluisivat olla samoja, kuin muiden työhaastatteluun saapuvien. Vaalit ovat näiden työntekijöiden työhaastattelu. Kherigi pyytää meitä miettimään, millä perusteilla valitsisimme työntekijän hoitamaan esimerkiksi yrityksemme raha-asioita. Antaisimmeko kadulla vastaantulevan ihmisen tehdä valinnan puolestamme? Kyseisen valinta tulisi varmasti tehtyä huolellisesti, pitkän harkinnan jälkeen. Miten sitten voimme jäädä nukkumaan vaalipäivänä, jolloin valitaan työntekijöitä, jotka hoitavat valtioiden julkisia asioita, päättävät laeista ja tekevät päätöksiä, jotka vaikuttavat jokapäiväiseen elämääsi, Kherigi kysyy. Hän korostaa, että näiden työntekijöiden valintaan tulisi kiinnittää huomiota, koska heidän tekemänsä päätökset kantautuvat lopulta joka elämänalueelle meidän ja meidän lastemme tulevaisuudessa. 

Kherigi reminds us that politicians are the employees of the ordinary people. Their selection criteria for the work should be at least the same as in usual job interviews. The elections are the job interview of these employees. Kherigi asks us to think about the selection criteria we would have in choosing a person to take care of our company's financial matters. Would we let a by-passer on the street make the decision for us? Probably we would make the decision carefully after a long consideration. Then how can we stay home on the Election Day when we should choose the employees who will take care of the public affairs, decide the laws and make decisions that affect our everyday life. Kherigi reminds us that we should pay attention to the selection of these employees because the decisions they make enter into every corner of life of our and even our children’s future.

Toinen FEMYSOn sivuilla julkaistu teksti käsittelee musliminuorten aktiivista osallistumista kolmannen sektorin toimintaan. Kherigin mukaan varsinkin nuoret eurooppalaiset musliminaiset ovat päässeet yksi toisensa jälkeen esittelemään taitojaan joka kentällä niin opiskelu- kuin työelämässä sekä vapaa-ajan toiminnassa. Kherigi haluaa kiittää kaikkia naisia, jotka ovat antaneet aikaansa ja energiaansa sekä jakaneet visioitaan muille tehden kaikkensa toimiakseen lähimpiensä hyväksi, jatkaen työtään sekä sanoin että käytännössä, haasteista huolimatta. 

Kherigi itse on mielestäni hieno esimerkki näistä aktiivisista musliminaisista, koska hän on usealla tavalla pyrkinyt tukemaan ja edesauttamaan eurooppalaista muslimiyhteisöä ja sitä kautta koko Eurooppaa. Kun kaikkien väestönosien edustajat tuntevat olevansa yhteiskuntaansa kuuluvia jäseniä, ennaltaehkäistään  ulkopuolisuuden tunnetta ja siitä mahdollisesti aiheutuvia ongelmia. Esimerkillään hän kannustaa muitakin olemaan aktiivisia yhteiskuntansa rakentajia.

The other interesting writing I saw on the website of FEMYSO is about that the Muslim Youth is active in the voluntary section nowadays. According to Kherigi especially the young European Muslim women have one by one got the opportunity to demonstrate their talents in every field. She wants to thank all these women for “giving their time, energy and visions to do their best to benefit their fellow beings, continuing their work by their words and actions” in spite of challenges.

In my opinion Kherigi herself is one great representative of these active Muslim women. She has in many ways been involved in supporting and developing the European Muslim community and in that way also the whole Europe. When every population group feels themselves to be a part of the society  it prevents them from feeling themselves outsiders and  the problems it could cause. By her example she encourages others to be the active builders of their societies.

Puolet tyttöporukastamme on osallistunut videoilmaisu-opintojaksolle, jossa tavoitteena oli oppia editoimaan videoita. Tytöt eivät osanneet aavistaakaan, kuinka työlästä videoiden editoiminen on. Alla esittelemme ylpeänä mainosvideon tapahtumapäivästämme. Se on yksi monesta videosta, joita aiomme julkaista blogissamme sekä meidän kanavallamme Youtubessa. Tämän videon on pääosin editoinut yksi ahkera nuori tyttö (16 -vuotias), joka käytti kaikkiaan noin 10 tuntia videon editoimiseen (mukaan ei ole laskettu videon kuvaamista). 

Half of our girls has taken part in video editing course where the aim was to learn how to edit videos. The girls had no idea how laborious the work would be. Below we proudly present our promotional video  of our event. It is one of many videos we are planning to publish in our blog and also in our channel on Youtube. This video is mainly edited by one of a hard working young girl (16 years old), who spent approximately 10 hours editing the video (this doesn't include filming the video).

Ulkopuolinen voi luulla, että videon kuvaaminen on helppo juttu ja hyvän videon saa kuvattua yhdellä otoksella. Väärin! Erityisesti kameramiehellä pitää olla kärsivällisyyttä :) Pidemmittä puheitta, nauti videosta!

An outsider may think that recording a video is a piece of cake and one can easily record a video with a single shot. Wrong! Especially the camera man has to have patience :) Without further ado, enjoy the video!

Summer Questions for Hijabees

Olen nyt tällä viikolla viettänyt kesälomaviikkoani kesätöideni välillä. Viikko ei ole ollut kyllä ainakaan tähän mennessä poikkeus kiireellisyytensä suhteen edeltäviin viikkoihin verrattuna. Jotain kiireisyyden asteesta kertoo se, että minulla ei aamulla ollut muita kahvimukeja pestynä kuin ylläolevan kuvan lasi... Eli aamu alkoi tavallista hienostuneemmalla aamukahvilla. Nyt pitää kyllä skarpata :D

Ensi töikseni lähdimme muutaman tytön kanssa Tyttöjen Talolle tekemään vähän lisää pinssejä projektiamme varten. Päivä oli aamusta asti ihanan lämmin!

This week has been my holiday week between my summer jobs. Yet the week hasn't been an exception as for it's amount of hurry compared the last weeks. Something about the amount of hurry tells the picture of my "coffee mug" this morning. I hadn't had time for doing the dishes so this one was the only cup for coffee I had that morning. Okay, I know that I should shape up a bit :D

First we went to Tyttöjen Talo to make more badges. The day was lovely and warm already on the morning!

Seuraavaksi pitikin lähteä pyöräilemään työpaikalle hoitamaan paperihommia lähipäivinä alkavien kesätöiden vuoksi. Joenranta oli täynnä ihmisiä aurinkoisen sään vuoksi. Aurajokiranta on kyllä yksi Turun viihtyisimpiä paikkoja.

Projektimme aikana olemme useaan otteeseen huivia käyttäviltä ja heidän tutuiltaan kysellen koonneet yhteen kysymyksiä, joita huivin käyttöön liittyen kysytään. Yksi esiin nousseista kysymyksistä oli, että voiko huivi päässä pyöräillä. Vastaushan on, että kyllä voi, kuten ehkä saatoitte arvata. Jotain pyöräilyjeni määrästä kertoo ahkerassa käytössä olleen, uskollisen pyöräni vaihdetaulun kunto, ks. ylläoleva kuva. :D

Voisin myös nyt näin kesähelteiden koitettua vastata kysymykseen, että eikö hijabin (huivi ja muu peittävä pukeutuminen) kanssa tule pihalla kuuma. Vastaus kysymykseen on, että toki välillä tulee, mutta jos vaatteiden ja niiden materiaalien valintaan kiinnittää huomiota, niin kyllä sitä pärjää hyvin. Maksihamekin, joita muslimit usein käyttävät, on oikeastaan paljon mukavampi ja kesäisempi vaatekappale helteellä kuin housut! Oletteko lukeneet Aino Frilanderin torstaista kolumnia Hesarissa kesämekoista? Minishortsit eivät siis ole muidenkaan mielestä ainut kesävaate, mitä on olemassa. :)

Then I cycled to my workplace to do some paperwork for my summer job which will begin in a few days. The riverside was full of people because of the sunny weather. The riverside of Aurajoki is really one of the nicest places in Turku.

During our project we have many times gathered together some questions we hijabees get often asked. One of the frequently asked questions is that can a hijabee ride a bike. Well as you maybe could guess, the answer is yes. Something about the the amount of my cycling tells the condition of the gears of my old faithful bike, if you noticed it in the picture above :D

Now when the summery weather has finally reached faraway Finland I could also answer to the frequently asked question of that is it too hot to wear a scarf and a skirt in the heat of summer. The answer is yes, sometimes it is quite warm, but it doesn't really matter when one chooses the clothes and their materials wisely. The maxi skirts we Muslims often use are actually even more comfortable in the hot weather compared to wearing for example trousers. So believe it or not, mini shorts isn't the only piece of clothing one can wear in the summer.

Seuraavaksi suuntasin moikkaamaan kaveriani ja hänen pientä tyttöään. Iltapäivällä meillä oli vielä projektikokous huivi tutorial -ryhmän kanssa. Kokous vähän venyi, koska jäimme tyttöjen kanssa harjoittelemaan eri huivityylejä ja pohtimaan syntyjä syviä siinä sivussa. Takana on siis jälleen kiireinen päivä, mutta kiireisyys ei kyllä harmita pätkääkään, koska tämänpäiväiset kiireen aiheet ovat olleet niin mukavia.

Vapaa-ajasta puheen ollen, tähän loppuun vielä yksi huivia käyttäviltä usein kysytty aihepiiri on se, että saako meillä nuorilla, huivia käyttävillä naisilla olla harrastuksia vapaa-ajalla. Onko huivi mahdollisesti este sille? Istuvatko kaikki huivipäiset vakavina kotona?

Niin, toki kotonakin on hyvä käydä (ainakin pesemässä niitä kahvikuppeja :D), mutta huivi ei ole este sille, etteikö vapaa-ajalla voisi nähdä kavereita tai käydä harrastuksissa. Toki aikaa olisi hyvä käyttää hyödyllisesti, mutta se taitaa olla ihan universaali tavoite. :)

Next I went to visit one good friend of mine and her cute baby girl. In the afternoon we had also a meeting with the group of hijab tutorial. Time really flew since we decided to practice different hijab styles and talked about everything between the ground and sky at the same time. So it was once again a busy day, but it doesn't matter because the reasons for the hurry were so nice. 

Then in the end one topic we get often asked about here in Finland. It is that can we young women, the hijabees have hobbies in our free time? Does the scarf prevent her from doing it? Don't all hijabees only sit at home with a serious expression on their faces? 

Well, of course it's good to be at home (at least to do some dishes to have a coffee cup in the morning :D) but the scarf doesn't prevent us from meeting friends and having hobbies in the free time. Of course time should be spent usefully but I think that is a universal aim. :)

Sara's Day

Tänään oli hyvin rento ja mukava päivä, varsinkin kun tiesin hyvin viikonlopun olevan tulossa. Lähdin kotoa lukiolle kello 7.30. Minulla oli tänään vain ruotsia, maantietoa ja englantia. Nämä aineet ovat minun lempiaineitani, joten senkin takia olin erityisen hyvällä tuulella.

Today was a nice day, especially because of the coming weekend. I left home for upper secondary school at 7.30 a.m. The subjects I had today included only Swedish, Geography and English. These subjects are my favorite ones, so because of that too I was in a good mood.

Koulun jälkeen saimme ystäväni kanssa idean tehdä jotain hauskaa koulun jälkeen. Pääsimme puoli kahdelta ja lähdimme sen jälkeen kävelemään torille päin. Ulkona oli viileää ja satoi hieman vettä. Se ei kuitenkaan ollut meille este. Shoppailimme yli tunnin ja sovitimme paljon kaikea, mutta valitettavasti tällä kertaa emme ostaneet mitään.

After school day I and my friend got the idea of doing something fun. The school day ended at 1.30 p.m. We left walking to the market. It was cold and a bit rainy outside. But that didn't stop us anyway. We went shopping instead for an hour and tried many clothes, but unfortunately this time we didn't buy anything.

Väsymyksen yllättäessä päätimme mennä italialaiseen jäätelökioskiin. Siellä söimme erittäin maukasta mango- ja pistaasipähkinäjäätelöä. Meillä oli niin hauskaa, ettemme huomanneet, kuinka aika lensi. Päästyäni kotiin minua odotti äidin tekemä lempiruokani. Syötyäni päätin rentoutua vielä viikonlopun kunniaksi ja vietin mukavan loppuillan perheeni kanssa.

When we became a bit tired we decided to go to an Italian ice cream kiosk. There we ate very tasty mango-pistachio ice cream. We had so fun that we didn't notice how quickly time flew. When I came home my mum had made my favorite food. After the meal I decided to relax some more and spent a nice evening with my family.

Minulla kestää laittaa huivi...  yleensä muutaman sekunnin. Juhliin ja muihin erityistilanteisiin laittaminen kestää viitisen minuuttia.
Ensimmäinen huivini...  oli valkoinen puuvillahuivi Marokosta.
Lempihuivivärini...  ovat vaaleanvihreä, vaaleansininen ja beige.
Montako huivineulaa tarvitset...  yleensä en yhtään, mutta juhliin tms. mennessä 3-4.
Hauskin huivitarinani...  sairaanhoitajana ollessa potilas kysyi, että mihin nunnakuntaan sitä kuulutaan

It takes for me to put the scarf on... usually some seconds. For parties and other special occasions putting the scarf on takes about 5 minutes.

How many hijab pins do I need... usually none, but when going to eid parties and so on about 3 - 4
My funniest hijab story... when I worked as nurse one patient asked me that which order of nuns do I belong
